My fourth film is about a woman who stands in front of all the men in front of her and against the patriarchal society that deprives her of all her rights, including the right of motherhood.

Hijab is not my choice, but it is part of our lives in Iran. This is a law imposed on women, but we have grown up with the habit of internal resistance, for freedom.

Following the university’s Cui protests, after the January protests, after the November protests, Iranian filmmakers continued to make the film. And in those years, some of the most important works of Iranian cinema – including Oscar nominated films were made.

My previous film, Leila’s Brothers, was accused of predicting women’s uprising and accompanying the domino of that movement, according to officials. As a result, I was summoned dozens of times to interrogate, taken to various courts and went to prison for a step. Eventually, the film was banned and then aired illegally in Iran. I was sentenced to prison and banned from work. I was called the “enemy” by the government.

I have made a film about a woman fighting against patriarchal society, and it is strange to me that I have been accused of working with the government by some people outside of Iran.

The film is part of a protest cinema that was on the verge of destruction during Ibrahim Raisi’s presidency. We built “women and children” to revive the tradition of social cinema that is inherently political in our context. We made this film to present an image of women and mothers standing against a patriarchal society.

“Woman and Child” is an independent movie. The only way to compromise was to get a license that I had to get it so that I could finally tell the story of a woman who was shouting in my head and waiting to be seen. “
