Trust cinema – Nouri Bilge Jilan, a prominent Turkish director and winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or award and the director of films such as “On Dry Grass” and “Winter Sleep” attended a master class directed by Mastane Mohajer in Iran. With his unique style in filmmaking and narrating deep human stories, Jilan has always attracted the attention of the world to his works. This master class was an opportunity for the audience to get to know his views and experiences in the world of cinema.
According to Barna; Bilge Jilan explained about the importance of choosing names in coloring the characters: Choosing the names of the actors is always a challenge for me. Sometimes even after the formation of the character, I have to change its name. For example, in order to let us know who the character is, Chekhov puts signs in the world of that character, but I have no such idea. For me, the name of the character comes more from real life and emotions.
Regarding how to show the unsaid and unseen in his works, Jilan stated: In real life, many things are hidden; From unspoken words, looks, or even the feelings we receive from them. We are trying to discover this hidden world. Even when we speak ourselves, what we really feel is rarely expressed. Rather, we present what we want to show.
Bilge Jilan further said: It is the same in the cinema. If we reveal everything, there will be no attraction left for the audience. We must be able to show life in such a way that the audience discovers something for themselves among the unseen and unsaid. This is the reality and emotions that are hidden among the conversations, looks and silences, and the director must skillfully provide them to the audience, but not in an obvious way. It should be a hook from which the audience can find something for themselves.
